Meeting of Viking’s sisters of the ocean

Last week, the second Viking ocean cruise ship met the first, in one of the most beautiful destinations in the world — Santorini.

The Viking Star was launched last year as the most successful river cruise line in the world took to the oceans. On this day, the Star met its newest sibling, the Viking Sea.

Look at the pictures…can you see a difference? There’s a good reason why — they are virtually identical and, with Viking’s ocean’s order book, four more are coming. I doubt you’ll see much difference over the series of launches.

The two ships were able to meet because they are sailing opposing directions on the Empires of the Mediterranean itinerary. Viking Sea, carrying 930 passengers, will make her way through the Mediterranean and into the Atlantic on the way to be christened on May 5 on the Thames River in Greenwich near London.

“It is hard to believe that less than one year ago, we were just setting sail with our first ship, and now we have two sister ships together,” said Torstein Hagen, Chairman of Viking Cruises. “It is a proud day, and I am already looking forward to next year when we will have three ships to cross paths.”

The third ship, the Sky, will be delivered in early 2017 and followed late next year by the Sun. The two remaining yet-to-be-named ships will arrive in 2018 and 2020, respectively.

All for now.
